How are walking times calculated?
Walking times are estimated with a modified approach to Naismith’s rule to account for elevation gains/losses and other practical considerations that require a more conservative bias. The basis of our calculations assumes a speed of 4 kilometers per hour on flat land. Learn more here.

General Description:

Located about 5.5 km from Dainichiji (T28), cross the Monobe River at Toitajima Bridge, go west following the Henro Michi, and it is a little open Daishido. It is around 4 kilometres before reaching Kokubunji (T29).

The original site, built in the Edo period (1603–1868) had deteriorated and was likely to collapse without significant structural support. At a local gathering, the restoration of Daishido and the construction of a Henro hut became the agenda. The restoration was planned to include a Henro Hut with the new Daishido. The construction funds were supported by 800 people in the neighborhood, and the memorial book is left in black ink on the wall of the hut. On the 21st of every month, a priest, holds a Daishi-ko, and welcomes pilgrims. This activity also led the government to open the municipal land in front of the hut as a flower field.

2/5/2019 Comments:

This hut forms a sort of portico to the related shrine. The area around is mostly open flat and rural, however, the hut is built near a small river and is somewhat protected by the embankment and trees. The hut has no walls so is open to the wind and the eastern (morning) sun. The location is solitary, but not isolated. The foot traffic in April 2019 was surprisingly heavy and the hut was completely full of seated Ohenro in the afternoon.

There are no amenities in the immediate area, but about 2 kilometres further to the west is Nankoku City and there are a wide range of facilities there. Tosa-Nagaoka railway station is about 1 kilometre to the west.
