The Naruto German House, or the Deutsches Haus, was built in 1972 on the site of a relocation camp, formally known as the “Bando Prisoners of War Camp”. Dozens of German prisoners of war lived in this camp for 3 years during World War I, from 1917 to 1920.
The museum contains extensive historical data and anecdotes on the daily activities and treatment of the prisoners. The German soldiers were allowed to engage in a variety of activities. Notably, a soldier performed Beethoven's “Symphony No. 9”, which marked the first time this piece was performed in Asia that we know of.
The German Village Park is a mere 10 minute-walk south of the museum, where you will find a memorial listing the names of the German prisoners who died during their imprisonment at the camp.
