How are walking times calculated?
Walking times are estimated with a modified approach to Naismith’s rule to account for elevation gains/losses and other practical considerations that require a more conservative bias. The basis of our calculations assumes a speed of 4 kilometers per hour on flat land. Learn more here.

Don’s sleep score: 3

This is a small rest hut at a tourist site. During World War One, hundreds of German prisoners of war were imprisoned near here. They organized an orchestra and gave the first performance in Japan of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. All over Japan, Beethoven's Ninth is performed on New Year's Day. This small museum is called Dai Ku Mura -- Great Ninth Village. The hut is roofed but not enclosed. Are are toilets, water, and vending machines on-site. It's fairly quiet though there is a highway a little over 100 m. away. The nearest food is at two small small cafes next to Ryozenji (Temple #1, 800 m. away) and at a convenience store 1 km. away.
